Public support services are easier to access when you know where to look. City, County, and State governments typically support different levels of community needs:

• City government focuses on local, day-to-day services that directly impact residents and neighborhoods. For example, police, water, and road maintenance are services of the City of Martinez.
• County government covers a broader area, both geographically and in its program offerings. Public health, transportation, social services, libraries, larger emergency responses, and unhoused services, among many others, are provided by Contra Costa County.
• State government sets policies and funds major programs throughout the State, which are then delivered locally.
