On May 18, 2020, the Contra Costa County Health Officer issued a new shelter-in-place ORDER HO-COVID19-14 to supersede the prior Order issued on April 29, 2020. This new Order went into effect at 6:00 a.m. on May 19, 2020, and “will continue to be in effect until it is extended, rescinded, superseded, or amended in writing by the Health Officer.”

The latest Order continues to permit use of tennis courts and skate parks but also maintains the following restrictions for park and recreational facilities:

  • You are not allowed to use recreational areas with high-touch equipment or areas for gathering outside of your residence. This includes playgrounds, picnic and barbecue areas, dog parks, and outdoor gym equipment.
  • Share recreational facilities that encourage social gathering and involve physical contact/high-touch equipment must be closed to the public to the extent possible, including: baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer
  • You are only allowed to engage in sports or activities that use shared equipment with members of your own household or living unit.Passive recreation activities – such as walking, jogging, biking, and relaxing – are encouraged so as long as you maintain at least 6 feet of distance between yourself and others and do not congregate in groups.

The City will be monitoring future orders of the Health Officer for modifications that would gradually allow for additional reopening of park and recreation facilities and equipment in the safest possible manner and will provide updates as these conditions change. Please continue to respect the health and safety of your fellow park users by wearing a mask and maintaining a minimum of 6 feet of social distance from those not in your own household or living unit. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our wonderful community remains our highest priority, and we thank everyone for their assistance in achieving that goal.
