The State granted these lands to Martinez on the condition that they are preserved for use and enjoyment by the public. This can be accomplished through several means, including protection of maritime commerce, fisheries, open space, wildlife habitat, and water-oriented recreation. Visitor-serving uses, such as a restaurant, hotel, and retail, are also permitted as they provide broad public access to the tidelands and enhance the public’s enjoyment of these lands.
The City will embark on a comprehensive master plan for the entire waterfront area (360 acres) next year. This plan is just a first step in that planning process, but it’s important that we identify the uses that we want to maintain and new ones that we may want to add.
