The Martinez Historical Society was established in 1973 to save a building from the 1890s located in downtown Martinez. Convinced that the City's history deserved a repository where papers, documents, photographs, and artifacts could be housed, the Society and the City acquired the "Borland House" for that purpose. A lease was obtained from the Contra Costa College District, and the Martinez Historical Society took possession in February 1974.
