Founded During the Gold Rush
Martinez began as a trading post in 1849, serving miners and settlers traveling to the California gold fields.
County Seat Since 1850
Martinez has served as the county seat of Contra Costa County since 1850 and was incorporated as a city in 1876.
Named After a Rancho Owner
The city is named for Ygnacio Martínez, who was granted Rancho El Pinole during the Mexican land grant period in the early 1800s.
Home of John Muir
Famed naturalist and environmental advocate John Muir lived in Martinez from 1880 until his death in 1914. His home is now preserved as the John Muir National Historic Site.
Joe DiMaggio’s Hometown
