The City of Martinez will hold a solemn 50‑year remembrance ceremony on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Martinez Marina. Hosted by the City of Martinez with support from the first responders from the tragedy, the event honors the 28 students and their teacher who lost their lives in the 1976 Yuba City High School A Cappella Choir bus accident, as well as the survivors, first responders, medical teams, and community members whose actions defined that day.
A Ceremony of Tribute and Reverence
This 50th anniversary observance is centered on tribute and reverence, recognizing the profound loss endured, the courage of the 24 surviving students, and the extraordinary efforts of those who responded. The program will include:
- Recognition of the 24 surviving students
- Honors for first responders, medical personnel, and Shell Refinery crane operators
- Performance by the Miramonte High School Choir
- Bagpipe tribute by a family member of two victims
- Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard and Contra Costa County Consolidated Firefighters Honor Guard
- Ceremonial bell‑ringing and reading of names
Local and state leaders, including law enforcement, fire officials, medical directors, and City representatives of Yuba City and Martinez, are expected to attend. The Mayor of Martinez will proclaim May 21, 2026, as a Day of Remembrance.
A light lunch and refreshments will follow the ceremony. Official ceremony will be held at the Martinez Yacht Club parking area, a short walk from the official memorial site.
