Organics Recycling Program

To increase diversion of recyclable materials from the landfill and in accordance with state laws AB 1826 and AB 1594, the City of Martinez approved the rollout of a commercial and residential “Organics” Recycling Program.  The City’s Program diverts food scraps, food soiled paper products and other organic materials such as yard debris from landfills, helping to reduce landfill-associated greenhouse gas emissions.

Under the new program, organic materials will be collected and sent to an industrial composting facility in Richmond. Diverting these materials from the landfill represents a significant benefit to our environment.

Residential - Single and Multi-Family
Residents are able to dispose of “organic” materials such as food scraps along with yard debris in their existing green carts. Green carts are collected weekly, on the same day as garbage and recycling pickups.

Republic Services offers free kitchen organics pails to interested residents upon request. To request a free kitchen pail, contact Republic Services at 925-685-4711.

Republic Services periodically offers Martinez households one cubic yard of free compost, a rich soil amendment made from the recycled food scraps and yard debris! For information on the next giveaway, please email mknutson@RepublicServices.com. Proof of residency required.

Compost Bins Available!

The City is selling SoilSaver bins for just $58 each, (retail value over $100), so take advantage and start composting now!

To purchase: come to City Hall (525 Henrietta Street) 2nd floor “Water Window,” M-F, 8 a.m. – noon or 1-5 p.m. (closed 1 hour for lunch), and pay check, cash or credit card. Finance staff will then give you a voucher.  Take that voucher to our Corporation Yard located at 300 Alhambra Avenue (northernmost end of Alhambra Avenue), and staff there will exchange the compost bin for the voucher.  Note that the Corporation Yard is only open M-F 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., so someone wanting to get their bin same day they pay (typically the case) should arrive at City Hall by 3 p.m. in order to ensure they have time to get the bin immediately thereafter.
