Downtown Martinez Community Based Transportation Plan

The City of Martinez, with support from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), embarked on a study of transportation needs and solutions for Downtown Martinez in January 2008. The Downtown Martinez Community-Based Transportation Plan (CBTP) is part of a regional program created by MTC, using a grass-roots approach to identify barriers to mobility in Downtown Martinez and to develop solutions to overcome them. The collaborative process has involved residents, community leaders, local businesses, community and faith-based organizations, transit operators, school officials, public agencies, and a Stakeholder Committee.

The project team (City of Martinez, MTC, Wilbur Smith Associates, and Stakeholder Committee) gathered input from the community through surveys and meetings to learn about transportation issues in order to develop a list of feasible and effective transportation improvement solutions and projects. A total of 229 community transportation surveys were collected over the summer months and survey respondents highly ranked a neighborhood shuttle, improved bus stops, and increased bus services as transportation solutions that would most benefit them. The public outreach portion of the Downtown Martinez CBTP wrapped up with the Community Open House on October 21, 2008, where the public had an opportunity to see the results of the survey, learn about the draft transportation solutions, and provide input by voting on projects.

The Downtown Martinez CBTP was completed in January 2009 and includes an assessment of existing conditions for transportation, identification of transportation needs and development of transportation solutions. The Downtown Martinez CBTP also recommend a list of improvements and potential funding sources for implementation that will make it safer and more comfortable for people to walk, bike, drive, and use the bus in/out of Downtown Martinez. By preparing this plan the City of Martinez, will be eligible for additional transportation funding sources through MTC as well as other funding sources.
