Starting a Business in Martinez

General Information

All businesses within the City limits must have a valid business license, including businesses operated from homes. Questions? Call the City of Martinez at 925-372-3576.

Locating Your Business

You’ll want to check the City’s zoning regulations before you sign a lease or purchase a commercial building. Call the Planning staff at 925-372-3515. They’ll explain where you can locate your type of business and what special requirements, if any, might apply.

Seller’s Permit

For any business selling tangible property that is subject to State Sales and Use Tax, a Seller’s Permit Number is required. For more information, call the State Board of Equalization at 510/622-4100.

Federal and State Identification Numbers

You’ll have to obtain both a State Identification Number and a Federal Employer Identification Number to report employee taxes. For more information, contact the State at 1-800-338-0505 and the Internal Revenue Service at 1-800-829-3676.

Fictitious Names

If you plan to use a fictitious name (a name different from your own), be sure and check with the County Clerk to make sure that no one else is using that name. You can contact the County Clerk at 925-335-7900, 555 Escobar Street, Martinez.

If You Plan To Sell Alcoholic Beverages

You’ll want to call the Police Department and the Planning staff to obtain approval for the sale of alcoholic beverages.
