Instructions to applicants for License Class 01 (Retail) Business Licenses:

The amount of the license tax applicable to your business is based upon the annual volume gross receipts generated by your business in the most recently ended fiscal year used by your firm. Following is a definition of "Gross Receipts" and what is NOT to be included in the definition: "Gross Receipts" includes the total amounts actually received or receivable sales and the total amounts actually received or receivable for the performance of any act serviced for which a charge is made or credit allowed, whether or not done as a part of or connection with the sale of materials, goods, wares or merchandise. Included in "Gross Receipts" are all receipts, cash, credits, and property of any kind, without deductions of the cost of property sold, the cost of materials used, labor or servi
ce costs, interest paid or payable losses of other expenses. Excluded from Gross Receipts are:

  1. Any TAX required by law to be included in or added to the purchase price and collected from the consumer or purchaser.
  2. Receipts from sale of any ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES.
  3. Cash discounts allowed and taken on sales.
  4. Credit allowed on property accepted as part of the purchase price and which property later be sold.
  5. Such part of the sale price of property returned by purchasers upon rescind of contract of sale and is refunded either in cash or by credit.
  6. Amounts collected for others where the business is acting as an agent or trustee to the extent that such amounts are paid to those for whom collected, provided the agent or trustee furnishes to the City with names and addresses of the others and the amounts paid to them.
  7. Receipts of refundable deposits, except that refundable deposits forfeited and taken income of the business are not excluded.
