The Business License Department is responsible for the licensing of all businesses situated within the City limits. All businesses located within City limits need to be approved by the Building and Planning Department before receiving a business license. A new business license is also required if the business changes location, ownership or name. Business license fees are based on the type of business being conducted.
If you are conducting business from your home within the city limits of Martinez, a completed business application must be sent to the Building and Planning Department for approval. Once approved, the city will provide you with a home occupation certificate. There is a one time fee of $95.00. Click here for the Home Occupation Application.
A retail business license fee is based on the business' gross receipts for one full year. A Gross Receipt Schedule Form for a retail business located inside the City limits needs to be completed in addition to the business license application. The application must include the business' resale number.
If you are conducting a business using a name other than your own, you will need to file a fictitious name statement, which can be obtained through the Contra Costa County Clerks office at 925-335-7900.
Businesses with more than one employee require a Federal and State Tax ID number, which can be obtained through the IRS office.
